September is Associate Appreciation Month!

In recognition of the hundreds of Associate members of the AHBA, the National Association of Home Builders has designated September as Associate Appreciation Month.  The AHBA has always appreciated the dedication, support and enthusiasm of its Associate members, but in today’s unsettled housing market environment, we appreciate the dedication and commitment more than ever.

During September – and every month for that matter – we urge all AHBA members to get to know one another better, learn about each other’s businesses whenever possible, and to strive for the AHBA motto to “Do Business with a Member!”  The AHBA is strong when individual members are strong and doing business with your fellow members is a great way to strengthen the association while ensuring that the people you work with understand the issues and concerns that affect your day-to-day operations.

Associate members are invaluable to our businesses and an essential part of our core foundation, tradition and spirit of the AHBA.  Let’s all thank them this month by doing business with a member!  Utilize the AHBA Online Member Directory.

Progress Energy Launches New Work Management Information System for Builders and Developers

Progress Energy is implementing a new construction Work Management Information Solution (WMIS) to strengthen the link between our valued customers, Progress Energy Construction Centers and our Customer Service Department.
We are phasing in this new system throughout our service territory, and it is now available in your area. The WMIS is available 24 hours a day, providing builders and developers the ability to:

  • Track construction-related work requests within two (2) business days after we process your initial request.
  • View schedules regarding construction-related work requests.
  • View detailed status information of construction-related work requests.

You can access the WMIS via:
1.
Internet access: www.progress-energy.com/carolinabuilders <http://www.progress-energy.com/carolinabuilders> -- Displays schedules and other status information about the construction request.  You will be prompted to log in with your e-mail ID and password.

2.  Our dedicated Builder Express phone line (1.800.636.0581) – Provides the schedule for construction-related requests.

  • Select Option 1 to check the schedule for an existing request.
  • Select the option to enter either the premise number or work request.
  • Enter your premise number or work request number to hear your schedule.

NOTE:  Until we fully implement this new system throughout our service territory, you may have construction requests in our existing system and new WMIS system. On the Builder Express website, both non-WMIS and WMIS orders will be listed on the same page in separate sections, although the non-WMIS orders will not provide the same level of detailed information as the WMIS orders. The VRU option noted above is only available for orders created in the new WMIS system.

Here’s how your company can follow updates as we transition to the new WMIS process:

  • Watch for important WMIS updates included with your Builder Express Contribution in Aid (CIA) letters.
  • If your company currently conducts business online via www.progress-energy.com <http://www.progress-energy.com>  or via fax, please review all Web and fax confirmations for additional details.

We’re excited about these changes and committed to strengthening our business relationships through expanded technologies.

Western Carolina University receives grant to fund land development major

Western Carolina University was recently awarded $100,000 from the Homebuilding Education Leadership Program (HELP) of the National Housing Endowment, the philanthropic arm of the National Association of Home Builders. The university will use the grant money to create a land development major and masters program with an emphasis on the legal, political, environmental and financial aspects of land development. With very few land development programs in the country, the Endowment hopes this program can become a model for others.

"More than 40 programs from the best institutions from across the country applied for this grant. To be selected out of this competitive field is recognition of the quality and future potential of Western Carolina's construction management program," said Robert K. McMahan, dean of the Kimmel School for Construction Management and Technology. "This grant expands opportunities for our students and faculty in a number of critical ways and helps reinforce our commitment to producing construction management professionals with strong critical-thinking skills honed in a curriculum full of hands-on, learn-by-doing experiences."

WCU is one of five grant recipients. The others are the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, and Northern Kentucky University.

Click here to read more about WCU's plans for the endowment.

We look forward to building our relationship with WCU on projects in the future!  Stay tuned for more details about upcoming collaborations with WCU!
